Keep the outline in source PDF files
I had carefully merged 35 separate scanned chapters of a doc in PDF so as to have an outline (using PDF Lab).. and when I OCR'd it in VelOCRapter (keep the name!) I lost the outline. I know, the quick solution is to OCR them <i>before</i> I merge them, but it would be nice not to have to do them one by one.
8 votesThanks for this feedback, to be honest I hadn’t even considered this, so it’s good to know when there are issues.
We currently extract images from the source PDF, feed it through the OCR, and then reassemble a new PDF blind. This leads to the sort of problems that you are having. It would be quite a major architectural change to support updating an existing file, but I can see advantages, and will look into how it might be achieved. -
Support OCR of images on the pasteboard
using an image on the pasteboard, or dragged in, would be good. And if you could put the text back onto the pasteboard too, that would be awesome.

The Mac App Store
I love VelOCRaptor. I think it needs to be better known. Please add it to the Mac App Store!!! It would catapult sales. Thanks.

Update the Spotlight index without writing a PDF file
If I don't care about getting the text from a file, but simply want to find it, it would be really cool if you could just add the text to the Spotlight index

add vCard (vcf) option
Having the ability to transfer/convert into Address Book would be very useful

keep the commandline and saving as plain text
please, to simply create workflows it would be great to stick with the unix command-line. Maybe more switches?
-o <output> # -o - or ommited switch -> then goes to stdout
-f pdf, txt, rtf # format the written output as pdf, as txt, as rtf
-q # autoscale the input
-r # replace original
-n "fmt" # name the destination according to fmt starting with dirname of the argument (./../../destdir/myscans/yyyy-mm-dd)
split tokens to variables: -w 1,5 # take first 5 words for the name
split tokens to variables: -l 3 # take 3 lines for the name
-p # create path…4 votes -
Monetize it!
You have done a great job. I would have no problem paying for this application, and would be more compelled to do so if the program had a limited number of conversions in "Shareware" mode before becoming inoperable until a serial number was entered. Get it on the App store and quit that second job!

Keep up the good work!
This is a great start. If you can get the output PDF size from bloating when OCR'd, I will probably buy a full license.
2 votesIf you buy a full licence, we may be able to afford to make it work for you ;-)

Use Document Window as the Progress Indicator
How about make the little view of the document scroll itself to the page being processed as a way to indicate progress.
2 votesThanks for the suggestion – it’s very clever.
Personally I like to be able to read the document as VelOCRaptor is doing its stuff, and I worry that we’d fight over control. But we do need a progress indication, so I’ll think about it.

Improve copied text layout
Maybe it's me but 'Select all' just doesn't. Seems to have about the same functionality as copying text in Adobe Reader. If my data is in a table I want it kept that way. Neither PDF nor Raw text is that useful.

Add ability to recognise tables
Lots of documents contain tables and currently the recognition is quirky, so it leaves you having to recreate the table. In a large document, this is very time consuming as I have just found out. Main reason why I won't purchase the product. Apart from that keep up the good work
2 votesYou’re right – tables are our nemesis! I hope to be able to put this right with a new version of the engine.

Keep moving forward! Love the program, love the price!
I think you have done a great job here. Interestingly, the program doesn't work for me when I drop a file onto the grey "drop image here" window. However, it works just fine when I drop a file onto the application icon.

Use jbig2 compression
I tried out Velocraptor on a ~13MB ~300 page google book PDF. The resulting PDF is 180MB. I looked for ways to compress it back down, and while I didn't find a good/cheap solution, I think the deal is that Google seems to be using jbig2 compression, and you seem to be using deflate.

Allow for a different destination directory
One of several preferences I'd like to see...

Add detailed progress report
I've dropped large image-laden PDF and velocraptor was spinning, and spinning. I can't judge whether it's going to take 10 minutes or 10 days.
2 votesIt’s in the pipeline, thanks for reminding us that it’s important.

Add the ability to drag and drop image data i.e. from an image in a browser
It would be great if I could drag straight from my browser into velocraptor. There must be some sort of drag and drop data flavour that could be used for this.
Keep up the good work.
2 votesI guess if we accept drags of data rather than files, we are going to have to have a default save location. Maybe this is the first legitimate preference?

Add support for JSTalk rather than AppleScript
...go on, it's easier than adding applescript and the syntax wouldn't suck
http://gusmueller.com/blog/archives/2009/03/introducing_jstalk__an_alternative_to_applescript.html
1 voteI’ve some sympathy for this suggestion, although it would have to follow after AppleScript, because we can support pretty much all scripting languages through that interface.

Add text-to-speech support
See Apple discussion http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp
1 voteThanks for the suggestion.
If you open the app without dropping a file on it – then drop a file, the window will stay open after OCR. You can then select all and use services to read it without saving as PDF. -
Reassurance
Reassure the frightened newcomer that a test download can be easily removed. The splendid "how it works" videos could easily have this. I have a really irritating banner from a thing called Network SpyAlert that wont be gone. This makes me hesitate to download your product, and many others
