I just wanted to say thank you!
Your product saved me so much time! As a college student, I have to read a ton of PDFs and when teachers don't make them searchable and they are just images, highlighting and annotating is painstakingly miserable. It was so frustrating when all I saw in front of me were typed words but I couldn't highlight a single thing. Thanks again!

Monetize it!
You have done a great job. I would have no problem paying for this application, and would be more compelled to do so if the program had a limited number of conversions in "Shareware" mode before becoming inoperable until a serial number was entered. Get it on the App store and quit that second job!

Keep moving forward! Love the program, love the price!
I think you have done a great job here. Interestingly, the program doesn't work for me when I drop a file onto the grey "drop image here" window. However, it works just fine when I drop a file onto the application icon.

Add ability to recognise tables
Lots of documents contain tables and currently the recognition is quirky, so it leaves you having to recreate the table. In a large document, this is very time consuming as I have just found out. Main reason why I won't purchase the product. Apart from that keep up the good work
2 votesYou’re right – tables are our nemesis! I hope to be able to put this right with a new version of the engine.

The Mac App Store
I love VelOCRaptor. I think it needs to be better known. Please add it to the Mac App Store!!! It would catapult sales. Thanks.

Spellcheck using specialist dictionaries
Word recognition of technical documents could be improved by pointing VelOCRaptor to specialist dictionaries that the user might have.

Support OCR of images on the pasteboard
using an image on the pasteboard, or dragged in, would be good. And if you could put the text back onto the pasteboard too, that would be awesome.

Use jbig2 compression
I tried out Velocraptor on a ~13MB ~300 page google book PDF. The resulting PDF is 180MB. I looked for ways to compress it back down, and while I didn't find a good/cheap solution, I think the deal is that Google seems to be using jbig2 compression, and you seem to be using deflate.

Too be frank, I’d like to get English working better first, but I’ll look at this then.

keep the commandline and saving as plain text
please, to simply create workflows it would be great to stick with the unix command-line. Maybe more switches?
-o <output> # -o - or ommited switch -> then goes to stdout
-f pdf, txt, rtf # format the written output as pdf, as txt, as rtf
-q # autoscale the input
-r # replace original
-n "fmt" # name the destination according to fmt starting with dirname of the argument (./../../destdir/myscans/yyyy-mm-dd)
split tokens to variables: -w 1,5 # take first 5 words for the name
split tokens to variables: -l 3 # take 3 lines for the name
-p # create path…4 votes -
Improve copied text layout
Maybe it's me but 'Select all' just doesn't. Seems to have about the same functionality as copying text in Adobe Reader. If my data is in a table I want it kept that way. Neither PDF nor Raw text is that useful.

Add as a service in Snow Leopard
From the services menu it would be useful from say preview to be able to send to VelOCRaptor
12 votesI’ve still to get my head around services, but thank you, that would be a nice integration

Keep your product name!
Some people like it, some hate it. Personally I like it as I think it sums up our output sometimes, mis-spelt and with crap in the middle, but then it was my idea.
There's an entry for change your product name as well. If you feel strongly one way or the other please vote for this or that.

Reassurance
Reassure the frightened newcomer that a test download can be easily removed. The splendid "how it works" videos could easily have this. I have a really irritating banner from a thing called Network SpyAlert that wont be gone. This makes me hesitate to download your product, and many others

When dealing with scanned documents in PDF, the output file should not be much bigger than the input
I OCR'd a multi-page scanned document in PDF that is 119 pages long. The original file is 16MB; the output is 41MB. I doubt the text accounts for the additional 25MB... Perhaps it would be possible to add the text to the PDF without re-processing the images?
40 votesThanks for the suggestion. We currently re-encode the image into the new PDF, which may change its size. Was the original black and white or greyscale rather than colour?

Support reading from screen grabs
Screen grabs have too low a resolution for VelOCRaptor to work well. Rescale them before reading so that they work.

provide a progress bar to indicate how long the ocr will take
This should give an indication of progress, not just the spinny wheel

Let me save as raw text
The PDF is all very pretty, but I want to get at the raw text. Let me save as text rather than PDF.

Add Growl notifications
Great software! Recognition is not perfect but your product shows amazing promise. If you could add support for Growl, simply to notify the user when the file is finished being processed that would be very helpful.
